Atlas Mountains trekking: Berber village treks from Marrakech

Multi-day treks in the High Atlas that are about passes, valleys and Berber villages rather than a summit. Private, with a mountain cook and guest houses, from Marrakech.

The High Atlas is more than Mount Toubkal. South of Marrakech, the range is cut by valleys with terraced fields, walnut groves, rivers and Berber villages that sit well away from the main summit trail. A village trek lets you walk through that landscape for two or three days at a moderate pace, cross passes with wide views, sleep in guest houses and eat what a mountain cook prepares for you on the trail. All our treks are private, with your own guide and team, and they start and end in Marrakech.

Our Atlas Mountains trek

How it compares with a summit trek

A village trek is shorter on altitude and longer on culture. The standard route reaches 2,340 metres, so altitude is not the main challenge, and the days are about steady walking of five to six hours, not an early alpine start. If you want the 4,167 metre summit of Toubkal, our Mount Toubkal trekking page compares routes of two to five days. If you want a single day in the mountains, our Imlil day trip is a short walk with no night out.

What to expect

Expect good walking boots, layers for cool evenings, a waterproof jacket and sun protection to be the core of your kit, a daypack for what you carry yourself and some cash for personal extras. The trek page has the full list. Mountain weather can change plans, and your guide may suggest a different route on the day: our village trek, for example, has a lower alternative for its last day. If none of the routes fits your dates or your pace, we will plan a different one.

Frequently asked questions

How is an Atlas village trek different from a Toubkal trek?

A village trek is about the valleys, passes and villages, with a high point of around 2,340 metres on our standard route and no summit day. A Toubkal trek aims for the 4,167 metre summit and spends nights at the refuge or in higher camps, so it needs more fitness and time to adapt to altitude.

How much walking is there each day?

On our 3 day Berber villages trek, about five to six hours a day, with steady climbs to passes. The route is graded moderate.

Where do we sleep and eat?

In traditional Berber guest houses, with a private mountain cook preparing fresh meals on the trail and in the evening. The trek is full board.

Is the trek private?

Yes. Every trip we run is private, so the team, the pace and the route are for your group only.

How much does a trek cost?

Our 3 day Berber villages trek starts at €350 per person. The final price depends on group size, dates and extras, and we confirm it in writing before you book.
