Blue-painted stairway and shops in the medina of Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is a small town in the Rif Mountains in northern Morocco, known for its medina where walls, doors and stairways are painted in shades of blue. It is far from the desert routes, so it works best as part of a longer trip across the country.

How to spend the time

There is no list of sights to tick off. You walk the blue alleys and stairways, look into the craft shops that sell weaving and leather goods, and enjoy the views of the mountains around the town. After the long drives of the desert days, the pace here is slow.
