Riders on camels crossing rippled orange dunes

Zagora is the main town at the southern end of the Draa Valley, a long ribbon of palm groves between the Anti-Atlas mountains and the Sahara. Amazing Morocco is based close by, in Tagounite in Zagora province, so this is the part of southern Morocco we know best.

What to see around Zagora

For centuries caravans left this valley for the south, and a roadside sign in Zagora still tells visitors that Timbuktu is 52 days away by camel. Today the interest is in the palm groves, the old Jewish quarter of Amzrou and, a short drive south, Tamegroute with its Koranic library and its underground kasbah. Beyond Zagora the road goes on to M’Hamid, the last town before the open dunes of Erg Chigaga.

Tours that go through Zagora

The Erg Chigaga camel treks also start from M’Hamid. If you want to start in Zagora instead of Marrakech, describe your plan on the Customized Trips page or contact us.
