Red-earth entrance towers of a film museum in Ouarzazate

Ouarzazate lies on the southern side of the High Atlas, on the road from Marrakech to the Draa Valley. Almost every desert route stops here for lunch or a night, and the town has two sights of its own.

The kasbah and the film studios

The Kasbah of Taourirt was once the home of Thami El Glaoui, the Pasha of Marrakech, and is well preserved. Ouarzazate is also known as Morocco’s film town: its studios and the nearby earthen villages have served as sets for international productions, and some of the studios can be visited. Ait Ben Haddou is a short drive away, which is why the two are often combined on the same day.
