Trekkers with a mule on a snowy mountain trail in the High Atlas

The High Atlas rises just behind Marrakech and separates the city from the Sahara. You meet it on almost every desert trip, and you can also walk in it.

Crossing the Atlas by road

The usual route from Marrakech to Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley climbs the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m), with long mountain views and Berber villages built into the slopes. Our desert tours cross it on the way out and, on some routes, on the way back through Telouet.

Walking in the Atlas

For trekking, the starting point is Imlil, the village at the foot of Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa. We run a 3 day, a 4 day and a 5 day Toubkal trek; see Imlil and Toubkal for how they differ.

Tours that cross the Atlas

The 2 day Zagora tour, the 3 day Erg Chigaga tour and the 3 day Erg Chebbi tour all cross the High Atlas on day 1. Describe a different crossing, for example by another pass, on the Customized Trips page.
