Three days is a popular length for Mount Toubkal, and the way you spend those three days matters. This route uses the first day as a warm-up: a hike from Imlil over the small summit of Isk, at 2,700 metres, then down to sleep in a guest house in the village of Aroumd, at about 2,000 metres. Day two climbs to the Toubkal refuge at 3,207 metres, and day three is the summit at 4,167 metres, the highest in North Africa, followed by the long walk down to Imlil and the drive back to Marrakech.

How this route differs from our other 3 day trek

Our 3 day Toubkal trek from Imlil walks up the Mizane valley to the refuge and sleeps there for two nights, with the summit on day two. This route does it differently: the first night is low, in Aroumd, after a warm-up hike, you sleep at the refuge only once, and summit day is also the day you walk all the way back down. That gives you a night at 2,000 metres to settle in, and a harder, longer final day. Choose this one if you want a proper warm-up and a village night. Choose the other if you would rather have two nights up at the refuge before the summit.

Day by day in brief

On day one you meet your guide at Imlil, with a welcome mint tea in a local restaurant and a map briefing on the route. You walk through Berber villages and terraced fields up to the summit of Isk, with wide views of the mountains and valleys, then down to a quiet spot near a shepherd’s goat shelter for lunch and on to Aroumd for the night, with dinner in a traditional guest house. On day two you follow the valley through walnut groves and terraces where farmers grow apples and walnuts, stop for lunch at the pilgrimage site of Sidi Chamarouch, at about 2,350 metres (a shrine closed to non-Muslims) and continue to the refuge for tea, dinner and the night. Day three starts very early for the summit, then the descent to the refuge for lunch, and on down the Toubkal valley to Imlil, where the transfer to Marrakech waits.

Fitness, altitude and weather

This trek asks for moderate to high fitness, and some trekking experience helps, especially for summit day, which is long: the climb, the descent to the refuge and the walk down to Imlil all happen on the same day. The warm-up helps, yet altitude affects people unpredictably: a headache, nausea or a bad night are the usual signs. Say so straight away, stay at the same height until it passes and descend if it gets worse. The weather in the mountains turns fast and nights at the refuge are cold. In the winter months, roughly November to April, the upper slopes can hold snow and ice, and that can mean crampons and an ice axe. Give us your dates and we will tell you what to expect.

Your guide and the plan

Your guide is a licensed, English-speaking mountain guide from the area. Before you leave Imlil the route is explained on a map, and the pace and the turn-back time are agreed with you. On the mountain they may change for the weather or the group. No guide can promise the top, because the conditions and your own condition have the last word.

What is included

The price covers the round-trip transport between your accommodation in Marrakech and the trek, the English-speaking guide, a Berber cook, all meals during the trek, accommodation in the Atlas Mountains on both nights, and mules with muleteers for your luggage. Personal expenses, travel insurance and soft or alcoholic drinks are not included, and neither is transport to and from the airport.

Shorter, longer or different

For the fastest route, see the 2 day trek. For more time at altitude before the summit, look at the 4 day Berber villages trek and the 5 day trek with an acclimatisation day. See every route on the Mount Toubkal trekking page, or ask us to plan your own.

3 Day Toubkal Trek with An Acclimatisation Day: day-by-day itinerary

Day 1Imlil, Isk and Aroumd

We pick you up from your accommodation in Marrakech and drive into the High Atlas through traditional Berber towns to Imlil, at 1,740 metres. A welcome mint tea in a local restaurant is followed by a briefing on the route with a map. You then walk through Berber villages and terraced fields, climbing gradually to the summit of Isk (2,700 metres) for the views, and descend to a peaceful spot near a shepherd's goat shelter for lunch. The afternoon takes you down to the village of Aroumd (about 2,000 metres), where you sleep in a traditional guest house with dinner. The day doubles as your acclimatisation.

Day 2Aroumd to the Toubkal refuge

After breakfast you follow the valley through walnut groves and terraced farmland, where local farmers grow apples and walnuts, up to the pilgrimage site of Sidi Chamarouch (about 2,350 metres) for lunch. In the afternoon you continue to the Toubkal refuge at about 3,200 metres, where you can rest with a cup of tea, take in the mountain atmosphere and have dinner and a night.

Day 3Summit and back to Marrakech

A very early start for the summit of Toubkal at 4,167 metres. If the weather allows, you are rewarded with views over the High Atlas and, on a clear day, toward the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara. You go back down to the refuge for lunch and a short rest, then descend the Toubkal valley to Imlil, where your transport is waiting to take you back to Marrakech.

Questions about the 3 Day Toubkal Trek with An Acclimatisation Day

How is this different from your other 3 day Toubkal trek?

This route starts with a warm-up hike over Isk and a night in a guest house in Aroumd, then sleeps once at the refuge, and the summit and the walk down to Imlil happen on day three. The other trek sleeps twice at the refuge and has its summit on day two.

How hard is the summit day?

It is long. You climb to the summit, return to the refuge for lunch and then walk all the way down to Imlil on the same day. Moderate to high fitness and some trekking experience are recommended.

Is the summit guaranteed?

No. We cannot promise the top, because the weather, the snow, the wind and your own condition decide it, and your guide may suggest turning back.

Where do we sleep?

In a traditional guest house in Aroumd on night one, with dinner, and at the Toubkal refuge (about 3,200 m) on night two. Your quote states the details of each.

What is included in the price?

Round-trip transport between your accommodation in Marrakech and the trek, an English-speaking guide, a Berber cook and all meals during the trek, accommodation in the Atlas Mountains and mules with muleteers for your luggage. Not included: personal expenses, travel insurance, drinks and transport to and from the airport.

What does it cost?

Prices start at €195 per person. What you finally pay depends on how many of you there are, when you go and any extras, and we put it in writing before you book. Tell us your dates and group size through the form and we send back one clear price.

People also ask about 3 day toubkal trek with an acclimatisation day

How long is the hike from Imlil to Toubkal?

Reaching the refuge from Imlil is a day of about 11 km and five to six hours of walking, and the summit is a further three to four hours up from the refuge. How you split it depends on the route: on this plan the summit and the walk down to Imlil share day three.

Is it better to acclimatise before climbing Toubkal?

Yes, if you can. Walking high and sleeping low lets your body adapt to thinner air. This route does it on day one, with a hike over Isk (2,700 metres) and a night in Aroumd at about 2,000 metres before you go up to the refuge.

Do I need a guide for Toubkal?

Our treks include a licensed mountain guide, who knows the paths, reads the weather and agrees the turn-back time with you. If you are asking whether a guide is compulsory on a given route, check the current local rules; we plan every trek with one.

Is Toubkal technical?

Not in the snow-free months: the normal route is a walking path with loose stones and steep sections. In winter, snow and ice change that, and crampons and an ice axe may be needed, which is why your dates matter.

How far is Toubkal from Marrakech?

The trailhead village of Imlil is about 64 to 65 km from Marrakech, an hour and a half to two hours by road. The summit is then one to two days of walking away, depending on the route.

Is this a private trek or a group trek?

Private. When a group reserves, the trek is for that group only, with its own guide, cook and mules, so you move at the pace of your own party.
