The Ourika Valley is the most popular mountain day trip from Marrakech, and for good reasons: it is close, it is green, and it ends at a waterfall. It is also busy, so timing matters. This page explains what the day involves and how a private trip can make it feel calmer than a seat on a large group tour.

What the valley is like

The Ourika river runs down from the High Atlas, and the road follows it up through terraced fields, orchards and mud-brick villages. The valley begins roughly 40 km south of Marrakech. Setti Fatma, the village where the road ends, is about 62 to 65 km from the city (published figures differ slightly). The road is slow and winding in places, so most visitors allow one and a half to two hours each way for the full trip to Setti Fatma. Along the way you will pass the market town of Tnine Ourika, whose weekly market is busiest on Mondays, and roadside stalls selling pottery, rugs and herbs. Stopping at them is your choice, and so is skipping them.

Setti Fatma and the waterfalls

Setti Fatma is known for a series of cascades above the village, often called the seven waterfalls. The path to the first one is a short walk of about 20 to 40 minutes over rocks and small stretches of water, and most visitors manage it in ordinary shoes with some care. Reaching the higher falls means real scrambling, which suits sure-footed walkers. In the village, the riverside terraces serve lunch on low tables with cushions, with the water running a metre or two away, which is the reason many people choose to stay for a long lunch.

Water levels change through the year. Published advice suggests that spring to early autumn is when the falls usually run best, and the river can be a trickle in some seasons, so ask us what to expect on your dates. Locals offer to guide visitors to the first waterfall for a fee; the route is clearly marked, and a licensed guide from our side is optional and goes into your quote if you want one.

Why go private

The Ourika trip is sold everywhere as a shared group day, with a fixed stop at a market, a cooperative and a restaurant. With a private vehicle you decide the time you leave, how long you spend at the falls and where to eat. The biggest difference is the start: leaving early means reaching Setti Fatma before most group tours arrive, and you are not tied to a group’s return time.

What to bring

Shoes with grip are better than sandals on the wet rocks, and a light layer is useful because the valley is cooler than Marrakech. Bring water, sun protection and a little cash for the stalls. If you plan to swim or paddle, bring a towel and ask your guide first about the current water level.

Other ways to leave Marrakech for a day

If you want a quieter mountain walk, Imlil is a similar distance with more walking between villages. If waterfalls are the aim, Ouzoud is the taller fall, but a much longer drive. Compare all of them on our Marrakech day trips page, or ask us to plan a different route.
