The Agafay desert is the nearest thing to a desert landscape you can reach from Marrakech in under an hour. It is a high plateau of rocky hills and dry ground south-west of the city, with the High Atlas lined up on the horizon, and it is at its best around sunset. We want to be straightforward about two things from the start: Agafay is a stone desert, not the sand dunes of the Sahara, and the activities on site are run by a local agency, not by us.

What Agafay is, and what it is not

Agafay is a stony, rolling steppe that guidebooks call a desert even though it has no dunes: bare hills, dry gullies, wide views and very little shade. There are no big dunes. If you want sand and the feeling of the Sahara, the real thing is much further away: Erg Chigaga and Merzouga are a long way south, around a full day’s drive, and we run desert tours from Marrakech that go there. Agafay is the short, easy alternative for travellers with an evening or an afternoon to spare.

How the day works: our part and the partner’s part

We are a Marrakech team. We organise the private transport from your hotel or riad, the timing and the plan with you, and we are your contact for the whole outing. On site, the activities (a camel ride, and in some places quad biking or a dinner) are run by a local agency based in Agafay that does this every day. The rules for age, weight, equipment and safety briefings are theirs to set. We do not run those activities ourselves and do not make safety claims on the partner’s behalf. When you request a quote, we confirm with the partner what is available on your date and pass on the details, including anything you should know before you book.

What people do in Agafay

  • Watch the sunset. Sunset is the reason most visitors come, with the hills turning gold and pink and the Atlas going blue behind them. Sunset times change through the year, so we plan the departure from Marrakech around the time on your date.
  • A camel ride. A short ride from a base in the desert is the most common activity. Length and format are set by the partner.
  • Other activities. Quad biking and dinner under the stars are widely offered in the area. Whether the partner runs them on your date, and on what terms, is confirmed in your quote.
  • A viewpoint stop. Many routes pass Lalla Takerkoust lake, a short drive from the desert. Ask us if you would like it added.

The drive

Agafay is about 30 to 40 km south-west of Marrakech, on the Amizmiz road toward Lalla Takerkoust, and the drive takes 40 to 60 minutes depending on traffic and the exact spot. That makes it a good option for a short trip, an afternoon, or an evening that ends back at your hotel after dinner.

Weather and what to bring

It is hot in summer days and cool after sunset, particularly in winter, when evenings can be cold. Bring a layer for the evening, closed shoes for rocky ground, sun cream and a hat. Dust is part of the experience.

Private, so the timing is yours

You choose the pick-up time, whether to go for a morning, an afternoon or a sunset, and who comes with you. If you want a longer day that combines the desert with a visit to the lake, or with the Imlil valley or the Ouzoud Waterfalls on a separate day, ask us to plan it.

Questions about the Agafay Desert Day Trip

Is Agafay the Sahara?

No. Agafay is a rocky, hilly desert near Marrakech, without large sand dunes. For sand dunes you need Erg Chigaga or Merzouga, which are far to the south.

Who runs the camel rides and other activities?

A local agency in Agafay runs them. We organise the private transport and the plan from Marrakech and confirm with the partner what is available on your date. We do not operate the camels or quads ourselves.

How far is Agafay from Marrakech?

About 30 to 40 km south-west of the city, which takes 40 to 60 minutes by road.

When is the best time to go?

Sunset is the most popular time because of the colour of the hills and the view of the Atlas. Evenings can be cold in winter, so bring a layer.

Can we do quad biking?

Quad biking is offered in the area, but it is run by the partner agency, not by us. Availability, age limits, equipment and the briefing are the partner's to set, and we pass the details on in your quote.

What does it cost?

We quote per group for the transport and plan, and the activities are priced with the partner. Send the date, the number of travellers and what you would like to do, and we reply with one clear quote.
