Merzouga Erg chebbi

Merzouga is the village at the foot of Erg Chebbi, the big dune field in the east of southern Morocco, where the dunes rise to about 150 metres. It can be reached by paved road, which makes it the easiest place to add a night in the Sahara to a Morocco trip.

A night in the dunes

The usual plan is to arrive in the afternoon, ride into the dunes by camel at sunset and sleep in a Berber desert camp. In the morning you watch the sunrise over the dunes and ride back. If you would rather go somewhere quieter and more remote, compare it with Erg Chigaga.
