One of the most common questions we get at Amazing Journeys Morocco is simple: “When should I go?” The Sahara looks stunning in every season, but each one offers a different experience – and knowing what to expect helps you pack right, choose the right tour, and avoid surprises.
Autumn (September to November)
Autumn is widely considered the sweet spot for a Morocco desert tour. Daytime temperatures in the Sahara settle into a comfortable range, nights are pleasantly cool rather than freezing, and the harsh summer heat has fully passed. This is peak season for good reason, so if you’re planning a trip to Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga in October or November, book your Morocco tours a few weeks ahead.
Winter (December to February)
Winter days in the desert are mild and sunny, often ideal for exploring kasbahs, oases and camel trekking routes without the crowds of high season. Nights, however, can drop close to freezing, especially in December and January. A good desert camp with warm blankets makes all the difference, and this is exactly what our Morocco private tours are built around. Winter is also a fantastic time to combine the desert with the Atlas Mountains, where snow-capped peaks create a striking contrast with the golden dunes below.
Spring (March to May)
Spring rivals autumn as one of the best periods to travel. Temperatures rise gradually, wildflowers bloom across the valleys leading to the Sahara, and the light across the dunes is particularly beautiful for photography. Spring is a great time for Morocco camel trekking and multi-day desert treks, since conditions stay comfortable for hiking without the extreme heat of summer.
Summer (June to August)
Summer brings intense heat to the desert, with daytime temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C. It’s not impossible to visit – sunrise camel rides and early morning departures make it manageable – but it does require careful planning. If summer is your only option, we recommend a shorter Morocco Desert tours itinerary with more time built in for rest during the hottest hours, and plenty of water throughout.
